Why it’s cold in one area depends on the area, but a major factor is often the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), which affects temperatures in North America, Europe, Asia, and Atlantic Islands. This cycle works like a global seesaw, so that when some areas are warm, others get very cold. As someone living on the east coast of the US, I can attest to the fact that the NAO is currently very negative, meaning that we and Northern Europe get lots of cold air, while Greenland and northernmost Canada may be more mild. But more people live in Europe and the US, so more people are currently feeling the effects. The NAO can switch from negative to positive in a couple of weeks, so keep checking the forecast.
