Why are sexually-transmitted diseases suddenly becoming such a problem for koalas?

Though this seems surprising to many, STDs are quite a problem among the koala population.  In fact, almost 50% of koalas “coming into care” have a sexually transmitted disease.  Chamydia is one of the biggest problems, especially because it can cause blindness and female infertility.  It isnt completely known how koalas came to be infected with Chlamydia, though it is postulated that it was through contact with other infected mammals.
