Some roses can stand bad weather and cold temperatures much better than others; whether a rose is hardy is mostly a matter of what traits it has been bred for. Most of the popular modern hybrids, including miniatures, tea roses and climbers, are actually not very hardy in cold climates like New England. Among the hardier categories are shrub and rugosa hybrids, and older breeds like albas and damasks.
