Why are the rainforests being destroyed?

Logging is a big issue in the Amazon, but one of the biggest issues in South America is the clearing of land for cattle. In areas such as Borneo the rainforest is being depleted due to the high demand of palm oil.

Many rainforests are being logged for the timber. They are also being cleared for cattle grazing and soybean production, and other resource uses. A more indirect impact is that of human development. Just by having more people on the planet, we are closing in on rainforests and expanding just because of the sheer numbers of people who need places to live.
