why are raccoon dogs endangered?

Racoon Dogs, or Tanooki, are endangered because they are often caged and killed for their fur in China.  Some of the fur from these animals has inevitably ended up in products that are sold in the US, though several companies have promised to stop using Racoon Dog fur in their retail items.  The US Humane Society filed a petition against such retailers, but only some have decided to act positively in light of the petition.

Habitat destruction also hurts raccoon dogs.  European raccoon dogs seem to have adapted relatively well to urban environments, but those in Asia have suffered from the destruction of their habitat as much as they have from hunting.
