Plug in hybrids are more efficient than regular hybrids because they have the ability to run completely on electricity within a certain range (right now around 40 miles for most). “Regular” hybrids have an electric motor side by side with the gas motor which turns on when the car is idling or after acceleration and is charged from the gas motor, wheels and brakes. This means that the plug in hybrid does not have to rely on gas (within a certain range) while the regular hybrid does. Therefore, in most situations, the plug in will get the better mileage.
