Why are pigeons only common in urban areas? Where are they originally from?

The pigeons that you see in urban areas are columba livia (Latin for olive tree pigeon and more frequetnly refered to as rock pigeon) and were introduced into urban areas due to domestic breeding as carrier birds.  Columba livia in the wild are sea-birds, commonly nesting along cliffs and headlands.  The ability of the pigeon to nest in high-altitude, open environments is one of the reasons it is prominent in cities.
