Why are pesticides so good for plants but so bad for the environment?

Most pesticides are formulated so that while they kill off the bugs that attack/ eat the plants, they do no real harm to the plants.  Herbicides do the same thing except they are formulated to only work on specific plants like crabgrass.  Pesticides aren’t necessarily good for the plant directly, they are just bad for the things that feed off the plants.  Animals and even different species of plants have different body compositions, which is why some medicines and chemicals have different effects on different species of animals.  Some of the same pesticides that are used to kill off bugs have pretty much no effect on humans while others can make us sick.
