Why are people stealing copper?

Over the last year the price of copper increased significantly ($4.50/lb). In fact, it’s at a price never before seen. So with copper’s abundance in electrical wires, it makes sense that people are stealing it to resell. The Dept of Energy estimates that damage done from people stealing copper results in about $1 billion of repair.

Copper theft is very high in the big cities and is senseless because it cost the tax payers in the long run. Here in Wisconsin a potential scrapper has to show a form of identification at the counter with the hopes of curbing the theifs from making money by stealing from others.Does it work?I would say yes because the honest person isn’t afraid of signing a piece of paper.
