Cliamet change is directly responsible for some very serious problems we could face in the coming years. These include massive species loss (50% or more) which could directly affect the ecosystem responsible for most of our food. Severe hurricanes are more common with a global temperature rise of some 10% over the century. Sea levels will rise due to melting ice at the poles, flooding most of the major metropolitan areas in the United States. With people driven out of their homes, decreased food production, and no respite from the heat, we could have some serious security issues in our country.
Climate change may ultimately have the same effects as a natural disaster. The hurricanes and earthquakes that we have seen in the past decade can be viewed as a similar sort of threat to national security. All of these phenomena are dangerous and life-threatening.
