Why are Orcas called killer whales?

The name Killer Whale seems to come from a 1970’s movie called “Orca: the Killer Whale.”¬†Orcas are fast and smart predators able to catch and eat large seals and even great white sharks, but the whale part is actually less accurate as they are actually part of the dolphin family. But of course the orca’s large size can easy lead to this confusion.
