Why are newspapers gray?

Newspapers are printed using newsprint paper. Newsprint is a blend of pulp from multiple sources including groundwood, thermomechanical and recycled paper. The reason it isn’t as white as standard printer paper is because it doesn’t go through the same bleaching process. White paper is bleached five times with numerous chemicals which gives it such a white appearance.
