Why are modern landfills designed to keep air, sunlight, and moisture out of them?

Sunlight I’m not sure about, but keeping water out means that it can’t flow through the landfill and contaminate drinking or swimming water nearby. As for air, some landfills today pipe out the gas produced by the waste and use it to produce electricity. Presumably that would be a lot harder if the landfill weren’t sealed.
