why are millipedes so smelly?

As a form of protection millipedes release a strong smelling odor from glands on the outside of their body. Also as a secondary defense after curling up the small pores release a hydrogen cyanide gas which smells and is slightly poisonous. Millipedes will also give off an awful smell if crushed.
