The Bering Sea is scientifically important for many reasons. Fisheries in Alaska are extremely productive, and account for half of all marine harvest in U.S. waters. The Bering Sea is also home to large populations of birds and marine mammals. Finally, climate change has heavily impacted the area. Where sea ice and Arctic ecosystems once dominated the area, warming temperatures have brought many changes to the Bering Sea. Scientists studying climate change are able to observe these effects directly there.
