There are some environmentalists that are against wind power because they are dangerous to small birds, raptors, and bats. They also pose a danger to hoofed animals such as antelope and elk. Environmentalistsexpress concern about the unknown long-term effects on wildlife. They believe that more studies need to be conducted before huge wind farms are constructed.
Probably the biggest reason is the bird deaths. It has been reported that the turbines kill an alarmingly high number of birds. Those reports have also been refuted by others (including HowStuffWorks and TreeHugger). The truth is that they do kill birds, but not nearly as many birds as are killed by other means. Additionally, newer designs seem to minimize the number of deaths.
