Why are log cabins mostly in the mountains?

Older log cabins are mostly in the mountains because those are the local materials rural people in the U.S. had on hand to build with. It was cheaper and quicker to build with the trees in an area than importing brick or building with mortared stone. People now build log cabins in the mountains because of the aesthetic quality, sometimes with wood from far away, but hopefully not.
