When new soil becomes exposed to the surface of the planet, lichens and moss are often the first organisms to colonize the area, expanding the creation of organic matter.  Interestingly, lichens and moss are indicators of air pollution, since different species are known to absorb different amounts of Greenhouse gases.  Currently lichens and moss are the primarly method of measuring the damages that sulfor dioxide has on living cells.  More moss and lichen growth means less environmental pollutants.
