Why are less people smoking these days?

    The health hazards for a person who smokesare more prevalent than ever. Also thanks to sin and excise taxes smoking cost more money than it ever has, the average price for a pack of cigarettes in 2010 was $5.51. The link shows the tax alone for a package of cigarettes.

    The decrease may have something to do with increased education about smoking and its health ramifications. In the first half of the twentieth century, tobacco companies had widespread ad campaigns for cigarettes and sponsored popular TV shows. At that time cigarettes were socially acceptable associated with what was “cool”. But in 1966, the Surgeon General began warning about the link between cigarette smoking and cancer, and smoking decreased as people became concerned about health. Now there are regulations in the U.S. and many countries requiring cigarette packaging to have clear warnings about potential health effects. Check out some cigarette packages from the UK below.
