Why are LED lights so efficient?

An LED light is more efficient over a typical incandescent light for various reasons.  LED lights use about 1/3rd to 1/30th the amount of of electricity than regular lights.  LED bulbs last much longer than a compact fluorescents or typical incandescents and are thus more cost effective.  Energy is also saved in maintenance and replacement costs.  Other ways include a lack of heat build up from LED lights and the fact that they are mercury free.
