The way I see it it’s a matter of responsibility. In large corporations responsibility is compartmentalized leaving few people with a since of accountability for the actions of the corporation. The hierarchical structure systematizes the decision making process allowing individuals to distance themselves from the concequences. In small corporations more people have the big picture view of the dealings of the firm and thus feel ownership and over them.
