They aren’t; landfills are bad for the environment and for the people who live near landfills. Landfills are even linked with higher rates of cancer. If we continue as we are, landfill space will eventually deplete entirely.
However, some companies are developing bioreactor landfills, which use liquid, air, and other things to increase the rate of decomposition. These advancements have the potential to help with our landfill problems, but are not a definitive solution.
