Why are green plants at the top of the food chain?

Actually, plants are the primary producers of the food chain, the lowest rung. Plants provide the food for all herbivores, which then provide the food for the carnivores. So really, plants aren’t remotely near the top. The only energy producer that is lower on the chain than plants is the sun, which is the source of all life.
