Generally there batteries are much more expensive to make and that translates into a higher MSRP for the consumer. Part of it might also be that they sell it to you based on how much gas you might save depending on how much you drive.
Even though the parts and technology are more expensive, making the initial buy more expensive, green cars are cheaper in the long run. The amount you will save on gas over the years will surpass the difference of the price between a green car and a regular one.
They are popular and trendy. Manufacturers know that people will pay more for them.
The price is relative to their demand.
