Because they are more recognizable and more acceptable to us as something to protect. Its not just gorillas, but pandas, elephants, lions, polar bears, ect. There are many species we identify with some aesthetic. But the work of impassioned people like Dian Fossey also helps to keep them in the public mind and therefore gets them more attention, than say a rare spotted lizard that’s just as endangered as the gorilla. These animals, though important might not even be the indicator species for their region, but their popularity can help save other endangered species.
