Why are the giant pandas so hard to protect?

This recent article on NPR may give you a partial answer. One of the reasons why pandas are so hard to protect is because no one really knows where they are or has seen them in the wild. They seem to be shy and quiet animals. Another reason is the environment they live in. The forests they can call are dense, deep and difficult to access.
