There isn’t a for sure answer as to why giant pandas are black and white, there are a couple of theories however. The first is that pandas developed these particular colors to so that they could identify one another in the forest to mate. The other theory is that the broad blockings of contrasting color helps to camouflage the panda among treetops and bamboo. Scientists have yet to confirm if either one of these theories is true (Zoological Society of CA, 2011).
