Fluorescent light bulbs produces light differently than incandescent bulbs. Fluorescent lights stream electrons through gas, which excites the mercury atoms and produces ultraviolet photons. The photons react with the phosphor coating to create visible light. This process produces much less heat, which is why fluorescent bulbs are 4-6 times more efficient than incandescent bulbs.
