Flipper bands have several harmful effects on penguins. Research has shown that penguins with flipper bands reproduce less than penguins without bands and that offspring of banded penguins are more likely to die. Additionally, studies speculate that penguins with flipper bands have a lower rate of survival than penguins without bands.
An study was made concerning the effects of flipper bands on penguins in the 1990s. They concluded that flipper bands were harmful to penguins as they were thought to cause drag while they were swimming, and thus affecting their ability to hunt. Overall, the banded penguins had a 16% lower survival rate and produced 39% fewer chicks.
