Why are files encrypted?

    Files are usually encrypted for safety reasons. If a computer or hard drive is stolen, confidential files will be protected by encryption. Strong encryption ensures that it will be impossible for sensitive or confidential files to by accessed.

    In addition to using encryption to prevent exposure of sensitive information due to lost or stolen hardware, many people use encryption to ensure privacy online.  Since many sites now sell online and ask for sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, encryption has become much more prevalent.
