Why are ferrets illegal to own in California?

    Probably because California has more unique species and diverse habitats than any other state, many of which are endangered.  Ferrets are excellent predators, so if they escaped and established a breeding popuation in California it could be devastating to the native wildlife

    Importation and possession of domestic ferrets have been restricted in California since 1933.  The points raised by the California Department of Fish and Game in “Department of Fish and Game Ferret Fact Sheet, March 25, 1994:
    Ferrets may bite (or attack), and are especially prone to bite or scratch childen and infants
    There is no proven vaccine against rabies in ferrets
    Ferrets may threaten native wildlife
