Why are enzymes so important to humans?

Enzymes are essential for our life, because they allow almost every chemical reaction in our body to take place. Any given reaction, from sugar breaking down to release energy, to a protein changing shape to link with another, requires a certain amount of energy to activate it. An enzyme functions to lower this activation energy by “helping” the molecules along: without it, the reaction either wouldn’t take place or would take much longer.

The two main categories of enzymes in our body are digestive, the ones in our gastrointestinal system that break down our food, and systemic, the ones in every part of our body facilitating reactions.
