Why are electric engines so quiet?

Electric engines use magnetic fields and current carrying conductors to generate energy, which is a much quieter process than the internal combustion (gas engines). Gas Engines compress and ignite fuel to create energy, which is essentially the process of causing a repetition of tiny explosions within the engine. This might be why the electric engine seems so quiet in comparison.
