Why are diesel engines more efficient than unleaded engines?

Diesel engines are more efficient because they burn fuel at a higher temperature, promoting more fuel-efficient combustion. They have higher energy density as well, so it takes less fuel to provide as much power. There is still a stigma attached to diesel because of louder, older diesel cars. Diesel technology is moving forward, providing more and more efficient automobiles.
