Why are delta’s so important to the earth?

River deltas, formed through geological sedimentation process, house ecosystems that are important for the health of the earth.  Salination and excessive sedementation processes due to human activity can cause delta systems to deteriorate, as is evident in the Colorado River Delta and the Nile Delta.  Deltas are an important part of the earth’s natural geological systems and cycles.

Deltaic sediments sometimes form excellent source, reservoir, and seal rocks for oil and gas, so deltas are often prime locations for oil and gas fields. The Mississippi and Niger Deltas are two that contain huge volumes of oil and gas.
