There are several possibilities for high lead levels in their blood, including leaded gasoline exhaust, industrial emissions, traditional medicines, cottage industries, some cosmetics, ceramic ware, and foods. Although leaded gasoline was banned in China in 2000, it was found by inspectors in secret factories as late as 2004.
