Why are carp good for a lake?

Actually right now carp are in the news for being bad for the lakes.  As you may have heard, the Great Lakes are becoming home to the Asian Carp which are making their way up the Mississippi River.  These are invasive species and are destroying the ecosystem because they have no known predators, and therefore are able to exhaust the food supply without being hunted by other species.

Thanks keith! That makes sense about the Great Lakes, but I thought I’d heard they had benefits to certain ecosystems. Maybe I’m totally wrong?
