Why are California farmers worried about water being diverted for development work?

Bay-Delta is the primary irrigation water resources in CA (a 738,000 acre partly enclosed body of water – the largest estuary on the West coast) delivering water to nearly 7 million acres of agricultural land. The California Aqueduct is a secondary resource for CA growers, although its primary function is to provide water for urban use. Since California is prone to prolonged and severe droughts, the state’s vulnerability to dry conditions and population growth, place a higher premium on the resource. If any of the valuable commodity is diverted for developmental purposes, the resources is thinned yet again.
