Why are fossil fuels buried in rock?

    Fossil fuels are fossils.

Plants and animals, mainly plants, die and get buried under water and sediment which covers and pressurizes the dead material into oil. The oil can be pressurized into a liquid, or it can be pressurized while inundated with sediment that becomes rock so when the rock forms it is forming as the oil forms. Oil in rock is known as shale-oil.
