Why are all deserts made of sand?

Sand only covers about 20% of deserts. There are six different types of deserts that account for most deserts. There are mountain and basin deserts, Hamada deserts which consist of plateau landforms, regs which consist of rock pavements, ergs which are formed by sand seas, Intermontane basins, and Badlands which are located at the margins of arid lands comprising clay-rich soil. Almost all deserts are plains where strong winds have removed small material exposing pebbles or cobblestones. Other surfaces in arid lands are bedrock outcroppings, desert soils, and dunes.
