Why are algae blooms bad? I thought algae sucked up CO2 just like other plants?

Algae blooms may or may not be bad. Harmful algal blooms are ones where the algae may produce toxins in the water or use up all the oxygen in the water. Harmful algal blooms have been known to kill loads of fish in the water because they deplete the oxygen in the water. Algae blooms are also the cause of deadzones where excess nitrogen and fertilizer runoff. Algae may take up some CO2, but only certain types will do so under the right conditions.
