Once the industrial revolution occurred in England, America had to catch up in technology and production which helped America jump into its own industrial revolution. Once this spurred innovation and production, the US developed quite quickly. Through the process, America remains the only remaining world superpower, although at this date that fact is arguable.
I certainly don’t believe the U.S. is the only world superpower, considering how in debt they are, their current lack of technological innovation, and their struggles with healthcare and education. However that is to another issue..
I would add that the two World Wars played huge parts in making the U.S. the size it is today. WWII in particular brought forth a very strong increase in industry and government, moving them on to the world stage.
