Alveoli are fine and thin walled because they are how our lungs let us breathe. When we inhale air into our lungs, the alveoli also expand as they fill with air. Gas exchange then occurs through the thin walls of the alveoli which have numerous capillaries. If they were hard and dense, they wouldn’t be able to do this. Also, from an energy consumption perspective, it makes sense for our bodies not to make internal organs hard and strong because they are supposed to be protected by our bones, muscles and skin already.
