Significant amounts of natural resources and high energy costs are used up to farm and feed a rapidly growing population. Such vital resources include water, electricity, manpower, soil, land, and more. Plant pesticides, fertilizers and other additives harm the natural process and also has been known to add to health problems as well. A 2005 study calculated that the indirect impact of agriculture on natural resources, the eco-system and human health in the US are estimated at $5.7 billion to $16.9 billion per year.
