Aerosol used to be very damaging to the ozone layer due to the use of chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, to safely propel the highly pressurized aerosol from the can. These CFCs damaged the stratosphere, which plays a major role in filtering out dangerous UV radiation from the sun. However, CFCs are no longer used in aerosol spray cans, making them far less damaging to the environment.
