According to the world’s top climate scientists, such as Dr James Hansen of NASA, 350 parts per million carbon dioxide is the maximum safe level of greenhouse gases the planet’s atmosphere can handle without giving way to catastrophic global warming. Before 2007, policymakers had frequently been using 450 or even 550 parts per million as a reasonable ceiling for carbon dioxide. However, based on more recent data from the melting ice in Greenland and other parts of the Arctic, scientists like Hansen have concluded that we have to get down to 350 parts per million to stabilize the atmosphere and prevent deadly consequences. Currently, atmospheric carbon dioxide is close to 390 parts per million – so we need to start reductions quickly!
