Canada, France, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Japan…and even more countries. Truth be told, the United States is one of most harmful countries to the environment on the planet. In the first citation there is a list of the countries with the strictest (most environmentally friendly) regulations–you’ll notice that the U.S. is nowhere near the top. In the second citation there’s info on the Kyoto protocol, an international treaty that would protect the environment. 187 countries have signed it, but the U.S. has not, because it would set formal restrictions on our emissions levels. Did you know that in 1990 we produced 1/3 of the world’s carbon emissions, even though we (Americans) make up nowhere NEAR 1/3 of the world’s population?
It will take a global effort to reverse the effects of climate change, as the entire globe is threatened. If the U.S. does not step up, there are many other countries to lead the way and pressure America. However, I do think there is a big change going on in the States, and the current leadership will make a strong effort to fight climate change, and many countries will follow suit.
