William Castle DeVries was born in 1943 and is still living today, so asking who he was is a little inaccurate. In any case, he became the first person to implant a permanent artificial heart into a patient when he implanted the Jarvik-7 into Barney Clark on December 2, 1982.
William DeVries also joined the Army Reserves 10 years ago, making him one of the oldest people to complete basic training. He taught at Walter Reed in Washington DC as well as George Washington Medical School.
