The Inca Empire (1438 – 1533)  were the first people to use terrace farming, in which they grew corn, potatoes, and quinoa. Their farm fields retained excessive amounts of water, so they created terraces to enhance runoff and reduce erosion. Since this farming style allowed them to grow large quantities crop, they stored the food for times of war and food shortages.
