The term greenwashing was first coined by an environmentalist named Jay Westerveld in an essay he wrote in 1986 about a practice used by hotels of putting green placards in the rooms of guests providing them the option of re-using the towels rather than washing them every day. Westerveld claimed that the hotels were making no effort to actually reduce resource consumption and were actually just interested in saving money.
